Sigh. Been so long. I'll tell you of my adventures later, but for now there's business to tend to.

Well G Lady and DC (intrepid videographer) went to the location, and visited the man with the dream to get the scoop first hand; that man would be the smiling Chris Greiner with yours truly depicted below.

Figuring the figurative artist

Greetings Gossip Lover,

Well, well, well, treat, treat, TREAT!

DC (intrepid videographer) and yours truly, Gossip Lady were lucky enough to be invited to visit figurative sculptor Christopher Gowell's private studio!

Granted; it might have been nice if we'd called ahead the day of our visit. But we had a few extra minutes and just dropped by and as it was it proved most fortuitous.

Much to our delight, and I venture to say yours, we found Christopher in the middle of a session with a live model. It's true - beauty begets beauty - at least in the case of lovely Emily, the model, and her facsimile taking form on Christopher's stand. See video here.

So there's that and a wonderful private tour of an outstanding sculpture garden at Sanctuary Arts - a school and art center, owned and run by Mz. Gowell.

Can't imagine this one won't delight the pants off you. Speaking of which, if you are offended by nudity, regardless of how tasteful, please skip this video.

I'm off now, but expect to hear from me again soon. I had trouble with this contraption and was unable to post the last video, so will do that and catch you up on lots of area happenings. For now, off to WEST ad ACT ONE, to catch Genvieve Aichele's one-woman show, which ends today! So get a move on!!

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

So, it's still early. There's time to get out and about even before dinner or theater and - RIGHT now - there's a perfect reason to get a move on. So pull on the sneaks and hit the street, 'cause it's Art 'Round Town with a special feature.

Discover Portsmouth Center is taking part in the monthly gallery walk, ad is jam packed with happenings. You an catch the opening of "Bill Paarlberg: Illustrating Portsmouth" a thirty year retrospective. There's Bill's early illustrations, a number of current watercolors and even a chance to "become one with" his famous Portsmouth Monsters - bring a camera. The event features his latest monster as well. I made her aquaintnce and LOVED her! (And hurry, Dan Blakeslee may still be playing live!)

Then, just walk across the foyer to the Seacoast African American Culture Center for lots of reasons. First check out the incredible work by painter Cassandra M Gillens, one element in a multi faceted Gulag program/celebration.

You can also meet Susan Strickler - a lovely lady - and director and CEO of the Manchester Currier Museum. That kindly woman is loaning the center a contemporary work created by Portsmouth Richard Haynes and a group of young artists.

Do say hi to my longtime friend Vernis Jackson (SAACC founder). She's there with a big smile of course. Love that woman!

Finally head up the stairs to the second floor and catch the show by Richard.
G Lady arrived before the actual opening an dhte place was already hoppin'. Lots of faces from the re:Ports. years.

Fun in the Sun

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Well it's a spectacular day in the neighborhood; sun without that oppressive humidity and so many wonderful outdoor happenings.

So hat on folks and head to the great outdoors.

For the second and final day you can dunk The Seacoast Rep's Artistic Director Craig Faulkner at the Bow Street Fair. Stopped by yesterday - fine art, original jewelry, hand-painted rugs, and threads for an American Girl doll that will leave the queen green.

And yes there was a bit of mean pleasure in watching Craig teeter atop that tiny platform then - plop. Just so much aplomb one can have at a time like that, but he's holdin' his own.

After scoring a few lovely items, you can head to Prescott Park for music and "Peter Pan," or to the Seacoast Science Center for the Petite Art in the Park exhibition and sale. Time it right and you can do it all!

If you haven't seen the Gossip Lady Video featuring Juston McKinney, a Portsmouth native now doing the likes of the Leno and Conan O'Brien's shows, not to mention Comedy Central, than get a move on.

This guy is simply a hoot - had G Lady and DC (intrepid videographer) in stitches I tell you. Laughed my gloves off! Lost the hat when I watched his DVD "Middle Class Hole."

High Flyin' Prescott Park

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

What a sight! G Lady took to Prescott Park last weekend and caught a bunch of high flyers being taught to take to the sky.

Watching the Blanchard boys Liam and Morgan (who play the Darlings in the Park's "Peter Pan)," along with Allyson Capetta and Megan Quinn (who alternate Peter and Wendy), learn to make weightless was worth its weight in gold!

Just watching their efforts to walk normally once strapped in their harnesses was a hoot - sort of Monty Pythonesque. (Photo ID's: littlest fella Liam; Morgan the big boy; Megan in pink and green; Allyson in navy).

This weekend you can catch them - harnesses hidden - at the Prescott Park Arts Festival opening weekend.

Well my friends, GL made it to "Rent" last night - which got a well deserved standing "O," by the by.

If in doubt about heading to the The Rep, check out the latest GL Video HERE. The last 5 minutes of it are entirely music performed by the Portsmouth cast show; no mics, in a hall with bad acoustics, just a single keyboard accompaniment - and it's still incredible!

Going up!

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

I took a stroll to the Prescott Park this week to get a peek at the set being constructed for "Peter Pan," this season's main stage production. Well let me tell you folks - especially those a tad disappointed with some sets in the recent past - they're out to wow, and WILL!

Um-um-um-um-um, that is a mighty fine looking set. It has things that move, hide, pivot and turn. Even sans color it's a beautiful thing.

Today, Friday, the crew is setting up the flying system. I plan on heading over this weekend to get a look-see at the rehearsal process. Word is Megan Quinn, one of the two actresses set to play Peter Pan, is a tad worried about chaffing. So, may I suggest if you head down you bring along some salve just as a kindness. Cookies of course, and salve.

One week from today, blisters or not, Megan and her counterpart Ally Capetta will be flying high in the park!

Rainy Day Things

Well another day for the plants. And God Bless 'um, they deserve their time in the - well under the clouds.

And so do you!

So suggestions for the day: I must recommend the Players' Rings double header . They are doing two Shakespeare based plays in rep, and on Sundays offer both! So today you can catch "Hamlet" at 2 then have a bit of vitals and be back for “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” at 7. Get thee to the Ring!

That McCartin woman gave it a rave review - and I must agree with her. What a delightful thing to do on a rainy day eh? (The above photo is of a few of the shows' dashing boys - do NOT be fooled by those innocent faces).

If you'd rather have a bit of a walk about - and catch "Bard and company" next weekend, its final - be careful, well there's all those delightful galleries in town. Remember the plein aire artist out and about a few weeks ago in downtown Portsmouth? That's Erin Murray, and she's exhibiting at the Kennedy Studio. G Lady had a lovely visit with this talented lady. Check out the Gossip Lady Video interview.

Last night "Hamlet" at the Players Ring. Go.
In fact, I'm on my way to the second of its double feature to see "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead," which is followed by "Hamlet." So if you hurry you can catch them both today!

Weekend Madness

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Been a bit of time again, but with good reason; so many things to go, see, do. And this weekend, alas, will be no different.

I've already changed gloves and sneakers a number of times. Do I go to the galleries? The new show at the Portsmouth Museum of Fine Art? (How can one resist an image such as the one to the left)? How about the Prescott Park Arts Festival's Chowder Fest? The Seacoast Rep's Swing Fling or Shakespeare at the Player's Ring - and it just goes on!

Well, I think I'll tack the Portsmouth Herald's Spotlight Magazine calender section to the wall and throw a dart. Where ever it lands - so will I.

Greeting Gossip Lovers,

Well the Music Hall Lobby was PACKED last night for its latest Scene@Five, "20/20" featuring the photos of some of the regions top photogs including - yes - the Gossip Lady Video's own DC, intrepid videographer.

In a mere week we'll post a video of the event that just might give a glimpse of the elusive DC . Might.

Till that time here - to our right - is one of the incredible photos by DC on display at last evening's event.

The second one is by the daughter of THAT McCartin woman, - we can't hold that against the lovely Jennifer Belkus Goolkasian, (Aphrodite Wedding Photography) and so in a show of fair play one of her works is posted here.

G Lady tried to post works by other artists, kindly supplied by Chris Greiner, Associate Producer of Scene@Five, (thanks Chris). But alas she was unable to open the files. There was portraiture, architectural, scenic, boudoir images and other genres.

Perhaps I can roust up a few more picture over the next few days and post them for your viewing pleasure. It truly was SUCH a special affair. So sorry if you missed it!

Spotlight on the Arts!

Greeting Gossip Lovers!

Been a long long - too long time. There's nothing to say but that winter whacked the old lady.

But I'm back, and glad to say, so is the Spotlight on the Arts Award. It happens this Thursday, at the Music Hall, 7 p.m. and it's free.

I'm already washing the gloves and putting some new fixin's on the hat. This is a not-to-be-missed event!

Here's a nutshell lowdown.

Cutie patutie Howard Altschiller, executive editor for Seacoast Newspapers, snatched the ceremony from the circular out-box and took on the job of overseeing what will likely be the best ever arts celebration this town has ever seen.

Lots of folk jumped on the volunteer bandwagon to make it happen, including the first Spotlight editor Dennis Wheeler, and this years cohost Jon Nolan and John Herman.

Portsmouth's own Zombies, led by Tara Walker Sullivan are performing, as will a quasi Michael Jackson impersonator, ( we use the term quite loosely).

There will be performances by the theater and music sector, Billy Butler is dropping by, WSCA will broadcast live, Deb Cram is supply some sweet visuals, Rachael Forrest will introduce a new Chef category - and well there's just to many happenings to list!

Some award categories have been altered or added to, and the nominee and final selection process has changed. For more on that check out the Gossip Lady Video by clicking here.

The point? Be there and share in all that makes this city vibrant and interesting as heckdom.

Greeting Gossip Lovers.

I can't believe its been more than a month since I've written here. What a slacker!
My excuse? So much art, so little time.

I'll go into that more real soon - promise. But for now, have you seen the last two G. Lady videos?

First there was that one with the punkers who just happened to drop by on a day someone else cancelled. Love these kids and so will you. Into the Woods

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

You all know – though I’ve tried to hide and deny – that G Lady is closely related to THAT McCartin Woman, who writes for the Portsmouth Herald and also happens to be a costume designer.

Well after much whining and cajoling I am allowing her to use G Lady’s blog to show off her latest costume designs for "Into the Woods" at Seacoast Repertory Theatre, and tout the production. (Mention this blog and get $5 off the ticket price)!

I will say; I took in the show myself last week, and must admit there are many, I repeat MANY exceptional performances in the production. It is billed as a youth production. Sorry that they did that.

It will likely turn some folk off - give them the wrong impression. Cause ladies and gents “Into the Woods” at Seacoast Repertory Theater is an exceptional show, with outstanding performers, mature performers, who happened to all be 20 or under. For once THAT McCartin woman and I agree.

Well here are some of the photos from the show. Yes, yes, yes, she designed the costumes. – She thinks of it as a one-woman visual art show that moves around on the back of professional animators – actors that is.

Dropped by Seacoast Repertory Theatre last night to peek in on the "In To the Woods" rehearsals, (an all time favorite musical).

Much to my surprise something very different was being rehearsed. Something I hadn't even heard about . ME! G. Lady! Oh the horror!

Anyway, there in the dark was a handful of people, Merrill Pieffer, Craig Faulkner, Claudia Coznier, Chris Bradley, Demond Nason - and other alum and a few newcomers (Ryan Bates the adult Tiny Tim in its current "Christmas Carol" and longlost college pal Doria Bramante for example).

So tell me people, what does this collection of people have in common? Think now.
YES! Incredible voices!

And tonight they'll raise them up as "the Friends" in support of the Rep Youth Chorus Holiday Concert.

And get this. It's FREE. They'd love you to give a donation, but no need. At 7 p.m. you can just sashay in and enjoy some of the newest voices - under the direction of Miles Burns, Mr. Voice himself, and then a few tunes from the old pros.

I'll be there with hat and bells on!

Oh and if you hadn't heard, the Rep JUST added a performance of "Christmas Carol" for Sunday, at 7 p.m.- its last. Get a move on people.

WHO IS IT??

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

This little heartwarming fella has been warming the hearts of fellow seacoasters for years.

He's made us laugh, made us cry and simply entertained us.

Starting this weekend he'll warm our hearts once again. This little Ring Bearer is playing an iconic character at the Players' Ring through December 23.

Hints?

Tinman at Prescott Park? Candle stand at the Rep? How about the devil at the latter?

Got it yet?

He's been performing on the seacoast for decades folks.

Final clue. A more recent role was as a full fledged human; Herbie in "Gypsy" also at the Rep.

This little cutie is none other than our Ed Batchelder, who performers as Cratchit in the Ring's current production of "Christmas Carol."

As soon as G Lady puts the keyboard down, she's off to gussy up and head over to the show. I hear director Rob Scullin has put a spin on the piece, putting Scrooge's sexuality into question.

That McCartin woman quotes Scullin in her "Spotlight" Gossip Column as saying he's not pressing the point but making it. Intriguing don't you think? Can't wait to see how it all plays out.

Waiting by the door in hat and gloves till it's time to head out for tonight's performance of "Striking Twelve" at the Music Hall - Without a doubt!!!

Gossip Lovers:

Do not. I repeat - do not - miss this. If you love a great story, intelligent, witty lyrics, music the gods pass the time with, well - I said it last year and I say it again - GrooveLily, the band that makes this happen, is NOT TO BE MISSED!

This is some of the finest, tightest performance/band/musical (jazz, rock, pop and showtune) in one cohesive, delightful tale. The Music Hall has it listed as the "anti-holiday show with Seinfeldesque humor."

I'm goin' with the latter and questioning the former. Sure it has a disgruntled guy tired of the holidays, but this show shows more of the season's original intent than most. It's touching, funny, interesting and thoughtprovoking.

All that AND some of the finest musicianship you're likely to catch anywhere, anytime, holiday or not.

Okay I'm gushing. But I'm doing it for your own good. It's true. Do yourself a favor. Catch this one-night show tonight - then let's consider launching a fan club ?

Since we're getting into the holiday spirit, (see post below), let's check in on a few - holiday spirits that is.

In the latest G. Lady video,I take on the bad boy of Christmas himself - Scrooge, (aka David Coffee). Much to my surprise a few of his "buddies" drop in during our tete-a-tete. (Gave me a bit of a start really).

Well Ebenezer was warm, inviting and forthcoming. (Yes, we are on first name bases now. Such a lovely gentleman). He talks openly about his past, future, and what he hopes for on Christmas. Well G Lovers,

The holiday happenings are in full swing folks.

Okay, so this is what you do. You go on line HERE, (or pick up a "Spotlight Magazine)," you take a deep breath then calmly make up a list of things to do Sunday, November 29, that's tomorrow.
There are four open studio/tour/craft events tomorrow, Exeter to Kittery, Maine; three in walking distance of one another. So get a move on!

The Nutcracker Tea is at Wentworth by the Sea and "Santa Come Home" is over at the Players Ring. And of course there's non-holiday fare - check out "Seascape" at NHTP. There's just far too much going on for you to be sitting around finishing off the left overs folks. Get up. Get out.

And PLEASE, don't you dare head to the mall before checking out these local arts and craft/open studio sales. Buy local - or Santa may just pass you buy!

And equally important we are talking: exceptional gifts for those you TRULY love; keeping money local; keeping artists off our street corners (don't they clutter things standing around clanking their cups!), and finally just an incredible day peeking behind doors, gawking and beauty and meeting folks.

Like to Howl on Halloween? Then check out this lovely lady on our right.

It's not her look that's hair raising. It's her schedule!

Mz. Chrissie Penny is doing All Hallows Eve up in a big way - and with the help of a few friends plans on taking you through "to the morning after."

I ask you folks, with a look like that who would DARE not do what this woman told them.

Anyway, in her personal version of a Halloween Marathon she will first scare the heck out of you in "Serving His Master" at the Players Ring, (9:30 show time). Immediately after that performance she'll haul it up to Rollinsford for a 12:30 a.m. show at Studio B789, where she'll scare the dickens out of you AND herself. (Mz. Penny is performing her first public singing engagement. That sort of thing tends to frieghten a girl).

The performer will be belting out "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" with the gentlemen to our left. Nope; that's not Tommy Gnosis OR the Wizared of Oz. That would be the Seacoast's own Aaron Hutto.

By the by, the B789 event starts at 8 p.m. with other live band performances and ends at 4 a.m.

Aaron and Chrissie will be backed by three bands: Midnight Radio, Catastrophic OK, and Good Freak Frank, (Nate Keyes).

While this gig is a concert, you can catch a full performance of "Hedwig," starring Hutto and who knows who else, at the Players Ring in 2010.

Just so my skittish readers don't get "a-scared," I'm posting pics of our two characters all cleaned up and looking pretty. - Calms you right down eh? - Though hopefully not too much, 'cause there's big doin's on the seacoast this October 31.

What ever your plans, start your night with the Portsmouth Halloween Parade.

Films, festivities and home

Greeting Gossip Lovers,

Do you know what's going on - RIGHT NOW- RIGHT HERE, in our town?!

It's the New Hampshire Film Festival of course.
There's films from the seacoast, the state, the country and the world.

There's works that well won awards in earlier, major fests, and yup, there's even celebs, Ann Kusak is in town, a grand juror, along with Mark Urman from Lions Gate Films, executive producer of "Monster's Ball," and Sean Finegan with Silver Pictures.

Our own hometown New Castle filmmaker Simon Harling, who wrote and directed "Drawing from Life" is supposed to be away at a residency with the Clews Foundation in France. He was and will be again . But he's flown home for the big Dos. The film's lead actress Katarina Morhacova is attending as well. Harling returns to France after the event.

And to think all you have to do is roll out of bed, walk a few blocks or drive a few miles and bask in the beauty that is film making!

There are lots of films that will really wow you folks. And don't you go thinking for one minute that if it has a local connection it is "home made." Some mighty fine filmmakers hail from here or have moved to the seacoast and now call it home. There's an incredible selection from area artist - get out there and learn something AND meet some very talented neighbors!

The event runs through Sunday, October 18, spread out through downtown Portsmouth.

Seacoast Rep, Muddy River, the Music Hall, Moffatt Ladd House and the Connie Bean.

Hostage situation over; CELEBRATE TONIGHT!!!!

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

At 5 p.m. tonight catch the “Spontaneous Release Party” for “Haunted Cemetery of New England” by Roxie Zwicker, at PublishingWorks Exeter headquarters.

This celebration marks the end of an arts’ hostage situation. Just today, in the Portsmouth Herald's Spotlight Gossip Column, THAT McCartin Woman talks about how “Haunted Cemetery’s” printer wouldn’t give up the goods. (See column for details). But finally, in time for the holy month of haunts - it's making its way to us - as we speak!

Word is you can buy it pretty much off the back of the truck. Delivery is expected between 4 and 5 p.m., so the truck reference is real folks. Roxie will be there to sign, of course. AND THIS JUST IN (honestly, as I'm writing this it came over the waves). The first five guests will get a FREE copy of "Haunted Hikes of NH" by Marianne O'Connor. Can't beat that with a witch's wand!

I've been told that given the short notice – after all that’s what spontaneous is all about - the Exeter company will get addition copies signed so you can swing by later and pick up a copy.

Greeting Gossip Lovers,

Well, it's time to get a move on folks. Today is the last day of a number of happenin's. "Telluride by the Sea" at the Music Hall is winding down; at 4 the fairies fly on, (see story below, AND click HERE for a video of GLady cavorting with the wee ones), and its the last night for the Players' Ring's first show of the season "Crush Depth."

Oh there's plenty more afoot , check out the "Spotlight Magazine" for listings - Bottom line, get up OFF that bottom and enjoy this spectacular fall day on the seacoast!

Over the next few weeks we'll talk about The Rep, (already showing "Altar Boyz)," Pontine Movement Theatre, NH Theatre Project and other venues launching their seasons. But I figured today, the last of the Ring's, 2009/10, first-show run, was a perfect day to share some photos of "Things Yet To Come." (Ouuuu, saying that makes me want to run out and buy a big red robe and a holly wreath. - But I digress).

So cast your eyes on these beauties. They were taken at the Ring's season preview , which offered snippets of coming attractions.

FAIRIES (and fish and films)

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Tomorrow the town will be filled with people heading to the Music Hall’s “Telluride by the Sea” and the first ever NH Fish and Lobster Festival or “Fishtival” at Prescott Park.

Some of those folks will likely be teeny tiny ones – itsy bitsy even.

Yes folks, this is the weekend when the fairies descend on our city on their migration south for winter vacation, and spend a few nights in Portsmouth’s South End in what's called the "Fairy House Tour."

“I’ve already been contacted by the head fairy, and they’re making their way back to the Portsmouth now,” said Ben Anderson, Prescott Park Arts Festival Executive Director, earlier this week. “They called to make sure we have accommodations. So the crews are building the houses now.”

Alas, the wee ones arrive tomorrow and we’re still a few Lilliputian lodgings short.

So please join G Lady and the other “Friends of the Fairies” down at the park this weekend and help build a few more cozy corners for our little buddies. The last thing we want is for them to start bypassing Portsmouth for better logging in Biddeford, or Berwick or Portland, Maine, or who knows where else.

Here are a few examples of dwellings from past years designed and fabricated by Fairy Habitat Master (or Mistress in this case) Joi Smith.

She promises to create still more masterpieces for our wee friends this year. Will you? You can go simple or elaborate, they’re happy either way. So come on down and join the fun.

Raining great art!!

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

I tell you folks this is a precipitation you want to be participating in; a downpour you will be down with!! Grab the superlatives and exclamation points, "Singin' in the Rain,"at the Ogunquit Playhouse production will have you in need of them all, because it truly is a bonanza of arts rolled into a single torrent.

I tell you G lovers this show is a heady art high. The costuming! Be still my heart. Oh, and set after wonderful set. The dancing? To die for. The leads? Marvelous. The ensemble? Terrific. And yes, that real, live rainstorm on stage with puddles and everything - fabulous!

If you like any element of theater arts, this one is bound to get you giddy. I have to say, G Lady has seen some fine shows of late, but nothing, I say nothing, with all the elements so perfectly in place.

There's only today and next week left folks. Pull on the rubbers and walk, ride or row, but get yourself to this production.

Did I mention the costuming? the sets? performances? .....

Last Chance, Last Dance ...

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Well, just take a look at all these happy little, hopeful faces. It was opening day of "Grease" at Prescott Park. And guess what this weekend is? The FINAL one for the main stage event.

After Sunday Sandy and Danny are gonso, so go on with ya, get a move on.

Once again the weatherman is talking possible rain. The park has lost 8 "Grease" performances due to the wet stuff to date. Tonight LOOKS as if they may squeak through - so hustle!

Oh, by the by. G Lady went to last night's concert; saw that WILD fiddlin' women April Verch. Spec - tac - u - LA. Those little girls dancing to the left of the stage were none-to-shabby either.

Festivals and concerts are numbered as well folks. Not much time left for live art along the Piscataqua. Sigh. Too, too fast. Well, don't say I didn't warn you.

Get a move on now.

Free Range Kids!

Greeting Gossip Lover!

Kids these days; so deprived really. I Pods, Twitter-thingies, laptops none of it makes up for having nearly every moment of their day laid out for them; where they’ll go and what they’ll do, along with an adult who walks them nearly every inch of the way.

Well in MOST cases that is.

G Lady had the good fortune of experiencing a team of Free Range kids in action recently and LOVED it! It’s incredible what kids can do with just a BIT of GUIDANCE rather than adult involvement.

Here are pics of a few of the BlackBox Theatre Productions', kids (at Seacoast Rep), a youth-organized, youth-run company, which will present it’s last production of “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown “ on Aug. 11 and a “back by popular demand” a production of “Hair” on Aug 10.

Sound crew, performers, directors, musicians, and techies, they’re all 22 and under and doing what kids need to do, exercising their OWN creative and decision-making skills, getting that gray matter in gear.

Rock on BlackBox! Rock on Rep! We need more Adult GUIDED and adult free time for our youth. Why shouldn’t they have the chances we had, eh? Our we really all that bad, hum?

Oh the memories; the hours writing plays and yes actually producing them in a barn; writing and illustrating books; working the band in the garage … well you get the idea.

So, set those kids free folks. What the world needs now is more Free Range Kids!

Just want to say how heartening it was to see SO many thespians at an art exhibition opening. Sure they attend regularly, but not in these numbers.

G Lady suspects it's because the show at the Gallery at 100 Market features the work of two theater photogs, Jasmin Hunter and Sofia Piel, (along with featured painter Elizabeth Stewart and 20 or so other artists).

It's a must see G Lovers. This theater photography brings a whole different mood to the show, funny, frightening - and well dramatic of course.

Check it out - and all the other killer art hung around the city at commercial and alternative galleries. Heck Three Graces is just outside 100's door. We're rich! Rich I tell ya!

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Well this is the moment of truth: can humans beat mother nature at Her own game?

We'll all find out this weekend when - assuming the break in the rain continues - "Grease" will open at Prescott Park.

Here are a few back scene photos from this past Saturday, the ONLY day that week the crew and cast were able to actually get down there and put a full day's work in.

Then of course the skies didn't clear again till late yesterday - Wednesday .

Can they pull it off? The tension is killing G Lady. But I'm sure it's nothing compared to what the painters, carpenters, actors etc., are experiencing at this very moment.

If you look carefully at the top photo of the stage you can see a painter working their little heart out on the backdrop. Next photo, a shot of back stage - well it is simply a tangle of work with opening less than a week away!

I am sure the real drama is being played out, right here, right now on Thursday night.

In the last photo is Stage Manager David D'Agostino , and Sound Engineer Katie Huges to his right, going over cues. (Check out that young man's face - lifted directly from a classic Roman sculpture that one is. You just can't not mention something that extraordinary).

Anyway back to the drama. Will they be ready?

It's a Tasty Night!

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

No. The Circus has not come to town. This, my friends, is the tent for tonight's big social event - not to mention good deed - the Taste of the Nation huppla down at Strawbery Banke Musuem.

Must dash off, don't want to arrive after the best is gone. But thought you'd enjoy these BEFORE pictures , when everyone was scurrying around like mad.

The rain had just stopped, (I think these folks have their own angel), the sump pump had removed the water from under the tent (though puddles were still in full evidence outside it), and people were scurrying about making the space all nice and special for the folks coming out to partake.

Arranging the flowers there are the ladies from Twig & Fern Designs. The gentleman setting up his table is Anthony Aiken from Anneke Jans, and the lady pulling out the whites is Rachael Beemer of Epoch at the Exeter Inn.

Hope you make it down there for all the wonderful delectables.

Once again one of those rare occasions just perfect for chapeau and gloves! And let me just say, let's all tip our hat to those organizing and pitching in. Great work folks! You've made your moms and community proud!

Each location offers the walk-about, live music or visual artist on sight - and cookies!! You'll be working those calories off walking about so enjoy!

Tonight you can find Ray DeMarco on the keyboards (see photo) at one location and at another you can catch Sarah Bauhan on flute and Emma Clarkson on violin together.

Amy Palmer and I may not share the neat gene, (wait till you see how spotless this woman's home and art studio!), but the one for irreverence? Most definitely. And that is why I find her booze swigging, chain-smoking, lost-looking moms hilarious.

I sometimes wonder if those people horrified by Amy's warped sense of humor are harboring a real affinity for or are too similar to these characters. Hum. Things to ponder.

Kids on Fire

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Well by now West End Studio Theatre is empty. But I suspect there's still a bit of partying going on in celebration of the season's final production by the New Hampshire Theatre Project's Senior Youth Repertory Company, (deep breath after that title folks) And who can blame them hum? They've worked hard. Created some fine art. And for seven, its the end of their time with the company.

I suspect those still partying-on are students and that "Hamlet's" Director Genevieve Aichele is home crying at the loss of her performers, which she announced to the audience were some of her all time favorite.

Well there can be no doubt that Gen had/still has, a great crew. There was some serious performances tonight. And as followers of G Lady's ramblings know nothing excites the gloved-one more than fresh faces in the seacoast work pool. Alas, some will be leaving us soon for college.

Luckily a fair number are still in high school, so we have them a while yet. - Yes, that's a sigh of relief you hear. We're talking some fine talent folks.

And yes it is a talented group. But I cannot help but single out a few from tonight's performance. Channeling that McCartin women again, (and again see previous story for an explanation).

Among them, those we're losing: Hamlet, Dan Kleinmann. He's heading to Fordham University in the fall, but not before playing Danny in Prescott Park's "Grease" this summer. Can't wait! Jes Marbacker, the ghost and grave digger, is off to Colgate University. And Gen is also losing Gabriel Dorfsman-Hopkins, who played Claudius.

Lucky for some of the notables are staying right here: Queen Gertrude, AKA Hannah Feintuch; Ophelia, Brigid Abreux and Laertes, Luke Gajewski. My guest just loved Punit Matta as Polonious, who's also here another year or so.Watch for these performers folks. It is definitely to your benefit. TRUST me!

If you missed this production - My sympathies.

I know heading to a youth production is a hard call when you don't know a kid in it. There's an assumption - amateur and all that. But keep in mind, half the folks in the Rep's exceptional "Urinetown," (see below), are barely out of high school and grew up on these stages. The Seacoast has sent its fair share on to Broadway, national tours and respected venues - at about these kids ages. They DO get there from here.

Again, one of the great wonders of a theater-rich community is watching these natural performers blossom.

My philosophy is see 'um before tickets to their shows are upward of $125 each.

The Perfect Form: Urinetown

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Anyone that's seen my smiling visage since last night knows well what this entry is about because I simply can't stop talking about IT. What has that silly grin simply plastered on my face is the Seacoast Repertory Theatre's production of "Urinetown, the Musical."

I've avoided crossing this line till now, but for this instance I will. To do this show justice I've summon the spirit of that that McCartin Woman - my FRIENDLY gossip rival - to address the matter. Don't ask me how it's done, it involves a crystal ball, candles, a bribe and chant- but it's worth it to get her insight.

And the word is: according to that former decade-long theater reviewer for the Ports mouth Herald - this production hits the TOP 10 productions, if not top five (the reception was fuzzy) of the past decade.

I have to say I agree wholeheartedly with her this time.

The script - like all is a matter of taste, but it's unquestionably entertaining. I found the longer you sit with it the more sense and more profound its superciliousness becomes. Yes, I liked it.

But the production!? (Imagine me looking to the sky and slapping a white gloved hand to my chest). Just exquisite! Every single, solitary element of it. The set, costuming, lighting, props, music, every detail is unequivocally spot on. Nothing smacks of community theater here folks.

Now the acting.

Where do I start. Well, let me say it's such a strong ensemble piece I don't want to single any one person out, (Tommy Labanaris, Megan Quinn, Christine Dulong), because I think that would be doing the show an injustice,(Chris and Jamie Bradley and Merrill Peiffer), and that's the last thing I would want to do.

I suppose you've noticed those few names in the previous paragraph set off by parenthesise. Well, once you channel a person it's not easy to discontinue the connection, and that McCartin woman won't be contained. Sorry.

But let me say this - there are 19 performers in this production and I wouldn't remove a one. They all deserve to be mentioned. It is the strongest vocal, acting and dance collective I've witnessed in years - so says that OTHER woman as well.

And direction! (Imagine another slap to the chest and eyes cast skyward), simply heavenly. Kudos Mr.Bill Humphreys. Return soon!

Choreography? Also heavenly! So, Adrienne Maitland, hurry back.

Music? - Ah Kathy Fink and crew, you've done it again. Magnifico. And don't we just love a live band. (Great work Mr. Paul Erwin Musical Director).

Rob Sullin & Jillian Mitchell LOVE your set design, LOVE IT. Matt Guminski - your lighting? Special. Lauri Gagnon's props. Tops, (and disgusting).

Okay, so that's what you get when you channel a former theater reviewer. It's hard to put a lid on it. But then, I really don't care to. That's the thing about outstanding art, you just want to go on and on about it.

To Pee or not to Pee is the question the play poses. The answer I'm giving is to BE there and SEE for yourself. Killer theater folks.

Well, once again I've donned a less than flattering hat all to make a point - and of course for your entertainment.

Perhaps DC (intrepid videographer) helped a little more than usual with the entertainment part of things. Get a load of this photo folks. G Lady is looking a little demonic don't you think?

But than when it comes to digging up the story DC and G Lady don't mind turning up the heat. And that's just what we did for the latest Gossip Lady Video.

First we'll take you on a short walk through the Portsmouth Herald/Seacoast Media facilities. But then G Lady turns the pen and pad on Howard Altschiller - aka the big guy, the Man, or the executive editor - to get the scoop on the state of the city's paper of record.

And how does Howard see the Herald fairing? You just might be surprised.

Kudos for the Homeboy

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Well alas G Lady was unable to attend Dan Brown's private screening of "Angels and Demons" at the Music Hall this weekend. Had the red hat for the carpet ready, but just couldn't fit it in.

BUT - and this is why we refer to her as the intrepid DC; G Lady's stupendous videographer, was there, on the red carpet, snapping pics for the blog and the home-pod Portsmouth Herald, along with Gina Carbone, pop reporter + movie reviewer, who put together a super story.

There is a spectacular video by "the intrepid you-know-who" on the Herald site as well.

If you got a peek at the place, ( of course I went down for an early peek), than you know a mini, tasteful forest was create as a barrier around Chestnut St. to give the illusion of privacy. There were angels and gargoyles posted at the entrance as well.

Because I was unable to stay, I pointed the pen and pad at my pal DC and told her to spill the beans. Here's what my buddy had to report.

When asked what other notables were in the crowd, DC said "Gina Carbone." True enough folks, true enough.

How was the man of the hour? "He was great, very personable and charming."
And the crowd? "Huge. The red carpet will need to be cleaned." Did DC feel a tad star struck? "Yeah, but not as much as when I see Gossip Lady." (Yes folks G Lady is blushing; but she loves it).

Was DC impressed by anything in particular? "By the head point guy, Tim - I think that was his name. He followed through on what he said he would do and that was to bring to bring Brown over when he arrived. ... The landscaping was amazing. They brought in all these shrubs and statues. It looked great."
And a few more notes from DC: "Dan arrived early and I'm really glad that I did the same. That would have really sucked if I would have missed him. ... I wish you were standing next to me Gossip Lady, to press his flesh with your white gloves. He would have loved you!" Well DC, wish I was there too. But duty called.

But absent as I was I still have a few words on the affair - as I'm sure you expect. And that is: Dan Brown You Rock! Folks he could have had his event anywhere. But he kept it real and on the coast. Dan you ARE the man and bigger than the books you write - which of course is saying a lot. You deserve and get one of G. Lady's Gold Stars buddy.

Alchemey

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Oooooooo. Magical symbol.

Looks like some unearthed alchemists marking; maybe directions to another dimensions or at least a way to make tin into gold.

Well both are right in their own fashion, sort of. It's certainly a symbol for a group of alchemists, the Iron Guild a collection of metals workers and sculptor/ teachers, that do a traveling iron casting show. It's people practicing one of the oldest and most fascinating art forms.

A number of this magic folk, work-ring showed up at Sanctuary Arts' Green Foundry, in Eliot, Maine, which is run by two of its members, sculptors, and foundryfolk Josh Dow and Lauren Holmgren .

It was so interesting that I'm just going to let the photos speak for themselves. Truly, truly a magical process.

So here's the process from melting busted up iron radiators in a cupola, to catching liquefied iron in a "ladle," to finally casting (pouring) into molds.

It was exciting, exhilarating, and - well a good word to describe it powerful; the visuals, the process, and all those people in rugged attire.

You must admit, the rough-and-ready gear is rather appealing. Smokin' would not be an overstatement.

The Green Foundry is holding a pouring on August 15, that will be open to the public.

Listen to G Lady folks, even if you haven't a shred of interest in sculpture, any art form or a foundry - this is simply an exhilarating experience not to be missed, somehow touches the primal.

G Lady will definitely be returning. Liquid metal and men and women in leather? Pah-lease!

Three Belles Throw a Ball

Greeting Gossip Lovers,

Well, that McCartin woman is writing a review for the Portsmouth Herald on the Edwin Booth production of "The Belle of Amherst." I believe it's out Thursday in Spotlight. But I'm sure she doesn't have these photos -- well I know she doesn't, because I took them!

I just had to tell you this is definitely something you want to get out too. It's the first Booth production in some time - a year? Maybe two? A hole too large and long on the seacoast scene.

It's also likely the last work we'll see by Director Mary Lynn Ruth. She's moving out of the area. So unless someone is offering room, board and a check, we probably won't be seeing her again. . So, sad. This lady has given us some great work: "The Madwoman of Chaillot" and "The Road to Mecca" at Garrison Players come quickly to mind.

Anyway, I thought you Edward Langlois fans would like a quick peek at his set and the costume for Carol Davenport, who plays Emily Dickinson brilliantly in the one woman show.

Oh, some of you don't know Eddie ? Local boy, grew up in Newmarket, has run a number of theaters, Edwin Booth founder and is unquestionably one of the most inspired visual artists in the region, costuming and sets. Scrumptious comes to mind, theatrical, exciting, - I'm refering to his ART. This production Eddie played delicate and authentic, with just enough abstraction to take it to another level - per his usual.

So, at the top, a picture of the set. Second photo is Mary Ruth - (farewell fine artist), and to the left is Carol as Emily, taken by Sarah Lowe who has documented Eddie's work for decades.

Do go catch it, it runs through May 17. All the info is in that McCartin woman's piece on Thursday. We're talking Gem here.

The Gang's all here

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Well, were you there, or did you miss a swell shindig at the Gallery at 100 Friday night? People came and went throughout the evening, visited with one another, perused art, ate up all the goodies, and took in a great poetry reading by the new Portsmouth Poet Laureate, Mark DeCarteret. (Top photo).

It was a rare occassion for many reasons. For starters - you will NEVER never guess who was there. G Lady had to rub her eyes, but sure enough - the all-too-often, missing-in-action Michael Simchik, the gallery's patron put in an appearance. (It was his first in more than two years!)

G Lady heard a few gallery regulars say they were moving in for a closer look to make sure it wasn't one of those cutout stand -ins. But no. He talked. It was the real Michael Simchik.

So, here's some great shots by Marcus Gale, children's performer. (You know, married to painter Mary Byrom). (Sorry, I'm unable to do captions folks. But folks are mentioned in order of appearance).

First up, Charles Farrell, the gentleman to the left with El - the woman on his left, who is both a poet and his wife. Farrell is the exhibition's featured artist. I do think, from the look on his and El's face, that the Christopher Gowell sculpture put the moves on Charles - don't you ?

As you can see by this next picture she's clearly made amends, cracked a joke, smoothed things over and all is well.

Next, up, the Lovely Lesley Kimball, Po rtsmouth Poet Lau reate Program co chair, who thanked Michael for his support of the PPLP.

She was followed by Michael thanking everyone that thanked him.

After that the crowd was treated to Mark's reading - (refer back to top, right photo).

What you can't see is Mark's lovely wife Anne, who was heard saying life had become hectic since Mark's appointment, and referring to herself as "the famous person's wife."

The next shot - I know you're thinking I've mistakenly slipped in a pre-battle still from the fight scene in "Gangs of New York." Nope. Please! Can you see Tess Feltes, the lady second from the left taking on - well anyone. Even a poet? ! What is she - 4-foot 11-inches, in heels, with her hair done up? Those kids in the back could take her!

No. It's not "Gangs of New York," just artists - writers and the visual kind - listening to Mark's reading.

The trio to follow starts with Neva Austrew, who took the "Best in Show, McLane Award. Next is Jean Hurlbut, gallery supporter McLane Law Firm, gallery liason, the woman everyone loves. She's the one who comes with the loaded envelopes. And finally Christopher Gowell who took "Honorable Mention" for the sassy sculpture mentioned earlier.

Oh, by the by, the folks at 100 Market and the PPLP, are inviting writers to drop by the building and get inspired, write a poem based on one of the exhibited works, then attend the June 3, PPLP Hoot, sign up and read it.

Read or unread 100 Market will have a binder for poems on sight and keep adding to it throughout the three month show.

Well, I think that's quite enough for now, don't you? The party is over, but the exhibition is up through July, so mosey on over. On a nice hot day, great way to cool down. Raining? It's dry. Wander the halls unhurried, and take in the art.

Too Pee or not?

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

To pee or not to pee, that is the question starting this weekend at Seacoast Repertory Theater.

This young lad had a lot of thoughts on the matter, right down to how the question was posed, answers were inflected and songs was sung. Hard to imagine anyone would have that much input on urinating, but as director of the Rep's "Urinetown, the Musical" he does. Did. No probably still does. He's not off duty for a few days.

So who is this squeaky clean kid?

Think movie and documentary maker, actor, director, producer, and Maggie the cow's best friend.

Yup, that's the Oakhurst farmer himself Bill Humphreys, who happens to be an Emmy Award Winner as well. This is one of the times you'll see his end product rather than him, but if he's done the job right we'll be fine with that.

Want a preview. Check out this fancy schmantzy clip The Rep put together. Makes me want to go out and start a rebellion, or at least belt out a show tune. Either will do. I'll decide after coffee.

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Have you visited Portsmouth's own unofficial Outsider's Art Museum since it reopened last week? If not, you're in for a pleasant surprise, and one a little less thrilling.

The good news, is the Friendly Toast (museum of sorts) has acquired new works of art. I'm posting a few of my favs. But there's a lot more new/old, exciting work. A giant seahorse! You are just going to love it.

Alas the sad news is the city won't let the restaurant use its back kitchen's gas stove, which means no more home fries from scratch. The HORROR !!

What is a woman to do when in need of a greasy carb fix!? (Me thinks the little girl to the right shares my sentiment. I believe that's why I was drawn to her).

Word is the Toast is looking for a company that can fill its needs. Last taste-test they still hadn't found the ringer - but they are still on the job. So here's hoping they find their way.

Till then the art and the tofu scramble will have to sustain us.

G Lady Communes with the Mannequin

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

You are going to love this one.
Did you catch that thrilling “Edelweiss Mannequin” article by Adam Leech in the Portsmouth Herald? Had to be the best laugh since the “The Red Ant Carnage of 2008,” – not that that incident wasn’t sad. Someone defaced art after all. But lucky for us Nath an Walker, its creator, saw the humor in the tale and allowed us a guilt-free chuckle, (video here). But I digress.

In the article Leech explains that the city has put the mannequin seated outside the Edelweiss Gift Shop in the Vaughn Mall on a three-month probation. The maxi Barbie’s crime? – Freaking folks out. Well at least a few of our fair city’s councilpersons.

Leech quotes Councilor Eric Spears as saying “…it kind of freaks me out actually;" to which Councilor Esther Kennedy responded, "I kind of agree with Councilor Spear. It kind of freaks me out, too."

By this we can gather they are “KIND of” freaked out; enough so to deny an assured year’s sidewalk squat for said mannequin. She’s there on trial basis. – Do you imagine they’ve set up a cam of some sort to record our reactions?

Well either way G lady needed to experience this menacing mannequin for herself – so hat on, gloves high, off I went.

And the verdict is? Oh PA-LEASE!

IT’S A BLOODY MANNEQUIN IN A CHAIR FOR LORD’S SAKE.

I got up real close and personal. She didn’t so much as bat an eye, squawk from a voice box or flex a trick finger. Nada. Two of my teen friends joined me. Their reaction? Mock shock. I documented it here for you to see.

Okay, so the shoes are admittedly a tad scary. But, truth is I’ve been more frightened by downtown hot dog vendors and you don’t hear me asking for them to clear the way for innocent unsuspecting pedestrian.

All I can say is – thanks for the laugh council-people. It was a good one.

By the by, after the event Mayor Tom Ferrini was over heard saying – with a clear smile to his voice – “on days like that – I truly love my job. And you can take that anyway you want.”

Hank and Dixie for the Whole Family

Well Gossip Lovers,

Here’s a G Lady “hat’s-up:” Drag that weary carcass up and over to Rick’s Place in York, Maine – tonight - for a serious pick-me-up. Oh, and do it early because if you don’t you’ll be listening to Hank and Dixie from a room away.

No doubt about it, Hank, (on guitar) Dixie (on violin) and the Knotty Pine Boys, (Dixie suggests "pronounce with a Maine accent)," pack the place on Tuesday nights. Folks gather early, order some homemade potpie, settle in and wait for the fun to begin about 6 p.m.

And believe G Lady when she says, when these two start wailin’ on their strings, there’s a whole lot of family-appropriate fun going on.

A few weeks back Dixie took Doug Martin’s latest balsa wood violin for a spin, never has the “Tennessee Waltz” sounded better. – Try that one with a baby on your back folks!

Okay, so I exaggerate a tad, but only a tad. Hank and Dixie do arrive with Levi strapped to one or the other’s back. (The picture above & to the right is of Dixie arriving at Rick's with Levi - not Hank - in hoodie, strapped to her back).

And if that cutie petutie gets a bit vocal during the night, Hank or Dixie straps him on and continue with the strings. (Check out the picture below to the right. See that little face peering over Hank's shoulder? Levi).

Haven’t heard about this incredible family event yet? Well it’s likely neighbors are keeping it to themselves hoping for a better seat. If it weren’t G Lady's job to spread the word, I might not have mentioned it myself.

But there it is folks; one of the best-kept secrets on the seacoast. By the by, there’s only a few gigs left till next winter; tonight show, nothing on May 5, but back again through May 19.

When not being Hank and Dixie these two perform as their alter egos. You can catch Dixie as Joyce Andersen this Sunday at Inn on the Blues. She has a big gig in Exeter on May 30 and lots in between. (Info here).

Hank – aka Harvey Reid - is heading out of town for a short tour, and then he’s back for a number of area gigs. (Info here).

Last night's event in honor of Robert Dunn at the Spring Hill Tavern was PACKED. Katherine Towler, who spoke at it, said both those that knew him and others discovering his work for the first time were in attendance.

puppet master and puppet

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

You know you’ve heard that line about dogs and owners looking alike. Well what about a man and his puppet?

Me thinks our friend Greg Gathers is carving a little closer to his own likeness these days. – Just sayin’.

To be fair the lighting could have been kinder to one of G Lady’s favorite puppet makers; a bit harsh to be sure. But had it been softer - this posting wouldn’t have been as much fun!

Well friends, you can get a closer look and be your own judge real soon. Greg and his Pontine Theatre co artistic director M. Marguerite Mathews, pictured here giving comfort to the elderly, will unveil their latest original piece “Dunnet Landing Stories,” based on the works of Sarah Orne Jewett; (starts April 24). For info click here.

Oh and if you have the constitution for it, you can get a gander of some naked puppets in an archive, Gossip Lady video. It's from a trip DC (intrepid videographer) and G Lady took to Pontine when the pair was working on its "Story of a Bad Boy."

This segment remains one of G Lady's favorite behind-the-scene peeks. It's a wonderful, wonderful look at the puppets in an earlier stage of creation, along with some other delightful, theatrical conventions Pontine employs in its work. All that AND you get to see these two impeccable performers in a messy moment. Gasp!

The King Queer - Joe

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Well I'm back from the dead - nasty nasty little bugger that spring flu. Still not 100%. But when you have something this good to share you just have to rally.

This is the latest Gossip Lady Video. DC (intrepid videographer) and G Lady visited the King of the Queers, Joe (Queer) King, the international punk rocker and plain old local stock, whose fished the area waters.

DC was less familiar with that latter stat, hence - must tell - she was a bit hesitant to entire the punkers cave . All she knew of the group were a few Queers' titles such as "She's A Cretin," and "The Old Man's a Fatso;" didn't give her the old warm and fuzzies. (Oh, and those are some of their more sedate tags).

But DC did muster and entered the Electric Cave, recording studio King and Jim Tierney own here in Portsmouth, and discovered the same thing you will; Joe Queer: rarely humble, always interesting; Joe King: surprisingly introspective, and a man riding a strong learning curve. So feet up and enjoy the show folks.

As with all the videos, G Lady only wishes she could include all the bits on the cutting room's floor. Oh the things I could tell : )

The Amazons!

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

This here? This is an Amazon (circa 1955). And you are not going to believe the company she keeps.

Can you name her?

Well this actress first performed on the seacoast in 1976 with Theater by the Sea. Not too many can claim that honestly.

She’s looks a heck of a lot like a lady she performs – though I’ll have to dig those pictures up to prove it, because neither of these bare that fact out.

Finally – the big give-away - she’ll run a theater fest at West End Studio Theatre, late summer/early fall.

Of course that means it can be no other than Stephanie Voss Nugent.

While she may be scurrying about prepping for her ACT ONE's 3rd Annual Festival of Fun, it’s a ways off for the rest of us; starts in August. Check her FOF site after May.

So that’s not what this posting is about – though it demonstrates her Amazon traits.

This one is about a MEETING of the Amazons. See Michael Tobin - (no he’s not one of the Amazons. Hold on it will make sense in a minute). – Anyway Michael's Dramedy Productions is bringing three of the regions more powerful female performers together on stage for the first time.

It’s going to be a blink-of-the-eye-event folks. A single night, staged reading of “Agnes of God.”

And the line up: (drum roll please), Stephanie Voss Nugent as Mother Miriam Ruth, WITH Tinka Darling as Doctor Martha Livingstone! Please be still my heart.

The cast is completed with a young lady (who can't even drive yet), whose made a mighty fine name for herself in the theater/dance community already, Ms. Alana Thyng, .

You MUST admit, that is some knockout casting!

I will definitely be there; front row seat, best hat and whitest gloves. Sad it’s only a reading, but it does beats never seeing these three together performing some kick-butt roles.

Cheeky Little Fella

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

So as the title would indicate this is another "who is that" and in this case it's this cheeky fella right here.

For starters he's a longtime friend of Anna Birch, - good thing, bad thing- depending on how he feels about this pictures. She's the one that supplied it.

You may remember Anna is a poet, and owner of Queen Oscar Design. Nice lady. Normally.

This photo she titled "Coldfinger" might change your mind about her. But generally she's a real sweetie. She sent another; unfortunately it won't upload, but if I can figure it out I'll definitely post at a later date - it's a sweetie.

Anyway, Anna and this guy have been friends since age 3. They attended school together, nursery through Hollis (NH) High, and right on through UNH.

So here's the big give-away hint folks: he and his band have won four Best in Jazz Spotlight Awards and tomorrow night will be inducted into the Spotlight Hall of Fame.

If you didn't get it with that one, well you simply aren't going to get it, right?

So here it is. It's Chris O'Neill, Amorphous' founder and it's single constant member over it's 14 years.

You can see him tomorrow night (April 16), at the Spotlight Awards, 7 p.m. at The Music Hall. It's FREE, and includes live performances by some of the area's best musicians and thespians. So, come on down!

Take a Bow

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Well it’s not often that the face of the child is such a dead-giveaway to the grown version, but I dare say in this case that little fellow in the middle may look older today, but not a heck of a lot different.

Okay, perhaps he was cuter and more innocent - and certainly more so than in the following photo – but the resemblance is so strong I shouldn’t have to give hints.

But, I shall.

Here we go.

He ranks among the community’s most talented. He’s multi talented; acts like crazy, sings like the gods and can accompany himself on a number of instruments like nobody’s business.

Thoughts yet?

How about this, he sang with great passion and perfect pitch while hanging from a bar doing repeated, one-arm pull-ups throughout. – Not too many can claim that feat. And if you saw it, you wouldn’t have forgotten it.

Almost a giveaway: he recently wrote a new musical with Dane E Leeman, workshopped at the Players Ring. Still nothing? Oh please! For thirty years this guy wows the crowds and you can’t come up with a name?

Dead giveaway: He’s hosting the Spotlight Award Ceremony’s at the Music Hall on April 16. Nothing? Well, just hang your head in shame!

See that’s what gets me riled. We have a talent like this in our backyard and you don’t know about him. Sigh. Just breaks G. Lady’s heart.

Well folks, it’s Mr. Billy Butler, who recently left us for the Big Apple. But, he’s coming home to host the Spotlight Awards (the TOTALLY free event). He’ll also hit the studio with Tim McCoy and the Paper Cuts to work its next CD. Then on Monday, April, 20, along with the workshop band and actors, he’ll perform a concert version of “Gay Bride of Frankenstein.”

Billy will perform a selection from “Gay Bride” at the Spotlight Awards as well. Other performers: Musical Theater Acts: “The Primary, Primary!” New Hampshire Theatre Project and “8-Track: The Sounds of the ‘70s,” Seacoast Repertory Theatre. Music performances: The Lonesome State; One Hand Free and The Molenes.

Of course I’ll be there – it’s a celebration of area arts after all. And did I mention this great night of entertainment is FREE? No? Well, hey, it’s free. So, see you there!

Hair & the Painter

Greetings Gossip Lovers

Well prom season is nearly upon us. And in honor of that wonderful right of passage –long passed for a few of us – I thought I’d rustle up a few good shots of folks you know, hand them on for a walk down memory lane and maybe a few chuckles.

Here’s the first brave soul. Know who it is?

Well she currently is the core to “Influences” an exhibition at the Kittery Art Association, up through the end of the month. “Influences” features a few pieces of her work and that of nearly two-dozen of her former and current students.

Some of the students started studying with her as far back as 1976; I dare say this photo has a few additional years on it, hum? : ) The hair is a dead giveaway.

Photo two is not a shot from the after-party; this is pre “The Britney Years.” It was taken for use in creating the artwork for the cover of a paperback novel. (She says she can’t remember the book’s title. Um hum).

Anyway, this painter exhibits throughout New England, is a member of the Cople y Society, and was one of its featured artists in last summers show. She currently has work at the Kennedy Gallery downtown.

So who is our lovely model? The Button Factory’s own Pamela duLong Williams.

SOOO jealous of the hair.

Anyway folks, send the G Lady your prom photos would you. About mid May I’ll give a prize to the owner of my favorite image. Could be a hat, pair of white gloves, a boa – not telling yet.

A Man of "Mind Blowing" Words

Hey Gossip Lovers,

Big news!

For the next two years Mark DeCarteret is our fair city’s head poet.

Mayor Tom Ferrini made the announcement tonight at the city council meeting.

Immediately after, about 30 people filed into a room next to the council chambers and celebrated with the new bard. – Yes, poets DO know how to party. (Were you taken in by that serious, brooder thing? Hah)!

Mark, who hails from Stratham, is the Portsmouth's seventh Poet Laureate.

According to the bubbly Ms. Lesley Kimball, co director of the Portsmouth Poet Laureate Program and poet, De Carteret brings energy, experience “and just mind blowing poetry.” Well bring it on Mark, your audience awaits!

DeCarteret will share his writing at the next PPLP hoot (first Wednesday in May) along with the recent past laureate Elizabeth Knies.

Meanwhile G Lady will track the man of words down, find out a bit more about him, and of course report back to you as soon as possible.

Oh and Mark - Congratulations. Can't wait to see what your project brings to the city.

SURPRISE!!

Greeting Gossip Lovers,

Well I hear a few of you got quite the surprise last night when you arrived in South Berwick, Maine, for "A Wicked Good Time at Town Hall." Now - I did hear you were polite about it - but a tad taken back when the headliner Jennifer Armstrong walked out on stage sporting a full beard.

Of course it was quickly apparent it was not the lovely Jennifer Armstrong, Scottish fiddlin' storytellin' bagpipe playin' balladeer, but her incredibly talented , storyteller, musician, folklorist and friend Dillion Bustin standing in for Jennifer who was home with a wicked good case of pneumonia.

Ida, (she of "Ida: Woman Who Runs With the Moose and Poolyle Productions, pictured left, dispensing her usual wisdom on a topic)," told G Lady, she was fine with the swap and did in fact have that promised "wicked good time." "You don't need to play the bagpipe when you have a high hunk factor," she reported.

Dillon, that heck of a trooper, good friend and exceptional performer, will stand in for his friend again tonight. So, if you like stories and songs with an Irish twist, mosey up to South Berwick folks. Ida promises you'll have that "Wicked Good Time."

A Side of Fries

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Must share. G Lady had a wonderful evening last night. I had an charming chat with Box ‘0 Fries and Miss Ketchup regarding the arts. The latter, a lovely lady, is not only a video star, but a former improv actress. Stimulating conversation to be sure! I assure you, a night with Mr. Fries, a processed tomato and Mr. Cheeseburger beats couch potato every time.

(Oh, and I can report Fries was not hurt when the elevator closed on his noggin. A bit dazed perhaps but not hurt).

So it all happened rather impromptu during breaks while the crew was filming segment eight of “Odd Noggin Land,” at Portsmouth’s Tredwell Gallery. The web series is the brainchild of John Herman and Ryan Plaisted, (co writers/directors).

Keep your eyes peeled. The film pair and their trio of foodstuff shoot on location all over the seacoast. Have a spot you’re willing to offer? They're always looking.- well John and Ryan are. The poor Odd Noggins can barely see a thing, and their fairly deaf - but lovely. Anyway interested in opening your space to the crew, write John at john.c.herman@gmail.com.

Weeknights as well

Weekends almost here. One more day.
But let me say there were a lot of folks getting a jump on it this week.

An impressive example: last night's Portsmouth Poet Laureate Program monthly hoot, held over at Cafe Espresso.

Let me tell you - the place was packed! And be still my heart there was a bona fide beret in the crowd, along with a Quaker straw, knitted caps, a fedora, numerous bald pates and a few natural brunettes.

But the most striking thing - beyond the art itself - was the sense of community. Just basking in that was a real lift folks. A real lift.

Featured readers were David Rivard, a UNH Prof, and Kristen Miller - yes with cello in hand. Killer night to be sure. (photo, Miller on right, with fan Ari Cameron)

Big things up for the PPLP. Come Monday Elizabeth Knies ends her two year reign as laureate and a new person will take possession of the Peter Hapney laureate sculpture.

I'm pretty excited to see what this new Laureate's project will be. There's been some really wonderful ones in past years.

If you want to find out who the new word-meister is, just show up for the city council meeting on Monday (April 6) where it will be announced about 7 p.m.. Then stay for the party that follows immediately after, right there in City Hall. It's all free and open to the public.

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

So, I ask you, what good is having a pulpit if you don’t use it? Well no good of course. Hence G Lady will put hers to good use today.

Here is a bit of heartfelt advice. GO see Groovelily.

Never heard of them? Well then I guess you don’t know anyone that caught Groovelily’s “Striking 12,” a few years back at the Music Hall.

G Lady did. And it is -without question - one of her all-time, favorite art experiences. No lie. I absolutely loved it. Bought the CD. Play it often.

Folks, if you like music, musical performance-theater, unique theater, a wicked violin, fine storytelling, incredible musicianship, violin/piano/drum trio, any one or a combination of these GO see Groovelily’s “Sleeping Beauty Wakes" at the Music Hall this weekend.

I have not seen this particular piece yet, but so loved the first I can’t imagine anything but wonderful things unfolding.

I could wax on about the group, but I’ll leave it at repeating one more time, Groovelily’s “Striking 12” remains one of G Lady’s top art experiences.

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

So, here's a fun one for you. Who are they; the baby and the center figure below on the tabletop?

First determine the sex. Then take a guess.

What I can tell you is both are graduating high school this year then heading off to college to study acting.

Each has worked seacoast theaters for 10 or more years. G Lady caught both in some of their earliest performances and has watched them and their talent grow. A wonderful experience.

Figured it out?

Hum, one played the White Rabbit, the other JoJo.

Still nothing?

A few more hints. Both will appear in the coming week in an area production and both are males. That's all I'm giving you.

The little driver is Dylan Schwartz-Wallach. His last local project (for the foreseeable future) is "Mystery Plays" with Harbor Light Stage's Bold Face Play Reading, this coming Tuesday. Then it's work and prepping for Carnegie Mellon School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.

And the person that does justice to those killer tights is Alex Dorr, who is heading off to Marymount Manhattan. For now you can catch him on stage at the Player s Ring, in "Tricolored Roof."

Could be a while before you see either of these fine young men again.

There's nothing spookier than a big empty building. Alas whatever ethereal claimed this space as home is likely packing as we speak, as the Portsmouth Historical Society, (PHS) is fluffing chairs, filling walls and setting up shop for another season of its Discover Portsmouth Center, (DPC), which opens this very weekend.

The DPC - should you not know - is the one-stop, put-your-feet-up, information and more for area arts and cultural concerns, located in the old Portsmouth City Library.

For those who haven't seen the old library stripped of its former face, here's a peek pre production so to speak. (Alas, no ghosties apparent).

But first, to the right is a picture of Marguerite Mathews, Pontine T heatre's co artistic director and President of PHS, taking shots from tiny little paper people who have aimed their Lilliputian rifles at her. Don't worry. She's an actress. Dodging little people's bullets is second nature.

Marguerite is in the former library main room, now were guests are greeted, information dispensed and cool history books and goodies are sold.

Next up Marguerite,seated in the room where DPC presents a short introductory video to visitors. It's the room BEHIND the main lobby and former check-out desk.

The next photo is of the middle room, second floor. Remember? This one had the tall books on the back wall. The front racks held hobby and craft literature; row two, movies and theater. Ahh memories.

The room with the ladder is the new home of the Seacoast African American Cultural Center. It's the former children's room. SAACC starts moving in this month.

Finally, below, a shot from the second floor. Just love it.

The upper level is open to area artists for exhibition. The lower level (remember, references, magazines, newspapers, research), houses Discover's annual exhibits. This year it will offer one on gondolas and others on 1950s and '70s Seacoast-related art.

Present, future, past - past-participle. Wonderful, wonderful Portsmouth.

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Lions and Students and Mimes - oh my! If you were downtown Portsmouth yesterday you likely spotted the man-beast and friends - including numerous men in fluorescent. (That orange brings just about any eye color out don't you think)?

It was a film in the making folks.

This dreary Sunday killed plans for a second day of shooting, but weather providing they'll be back in Market Square next week. Sort of a fun thing to take in on the way to a play, gallery or concert. The whole family can enjoy it for free : ) (Love that word. I mean we are from the "Live Free or Die" state after all).

Lion and company are just the latest movie crew to use the Port City. This group of filmmakers is led by writer/director/producer Ryan VanDalinda, (bottom pic on the right), a former Winnacunnet High School student, currently a senior at Keene State College.

The flick, "Fursona," is the Senior Thesis Capstone Project for 12 KSC students, all part of the florescent wearing team.

Justin Wakefield (that's him to the left, front and fluorescent) the film's assistant director says he's not sure what day they'll return next week. But he promises to call when the time is firm. And I promise to post a quick note on the blog so you can take the kids to watch the process.

The Best Blue is Cupcake

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Well paint my cupcake blue, it's another little alien photo for your entertainment.

Oh stop tsh,tshing! Infants are all strange looking creatures - cute as the dickens, but very, very odd.

This little gremlin happened to grew into quite the strapping lad, something like 6'6". Know who he is?

Here's another hint, he's Pied Piper of the pen for the 10 through tween crowd - makes 'um laugh, makes 'um - well laugh. Not a lot of crying in this author's books, though his latest series does give a lot to chew on - including cupcakes, but I'll get to that in a minute.

Let's see, he's a chess instructor, works origami quite well, juggles - and he owns a cool 17-foot chessboard! Not yet? - My you do have to get out more.

Okay see if these titles jar anything; “Escapade Johnson and Mayhem at Mount Moosilauke” “The Coffee Shop of the Living Dead” and “The Witches of Belknap County?” Well if that didn't work I might as well give it up.

The mystery minikin of the day is Michael Sullivan, author of all three aforementioned books, part of the Escaped Johnson series. (Read them all. Laughed out loud).

Mike recently released "The Sapphire Knight," the first in his latest series "The Bard."

So where does the cupcake come in?

Well his publisher Publishing Works is throwing a number of parties, free to the public, in honor of this latest release. In addition it will raffling off 10 parties for 23 people each.

This event's luscious cupcake with blue frosting was designed specifically for "Sapphire Knight" parties by Cold Stone Creamery. All the delicious details are in this coming week's "Gossip Column" in "Portsmouth Herald's" "Spotlight Magazine" (by that McCartin Woman). Let me just say there are SIX components to each little treat. (Take that McCossip)!

My one question is, can a person be a tad over 10 and still be eligible for the party?

Tom and Andy Related?

Well I have to say, "Hardest Working" seacoast artist might just have to go to Tom Bergeron. How's he related to the seacoast? Certainly you know he's a local and still has a home in these parts.

Anyway, caught the boy conducting an interview on "Good Morning American" this a.m.; the day after a late night (and some what upsetting one) on "Dancing with The Stars."

What DOESN'T this guy do? Two hit TV shows, a film in post production, lots of side gigs, my goodness.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Oh and is it just me, or have you noticed how much Tom and Andy Fling look alike. I tell you, the resemblance is even stronger in person. Uncanny.

I bet this photo conjures visions of a laundry room under water. But no. That's not the Maytag Repair Man, though it is who G Lady would call for household repairs. - Have to keep those artists working.

And that picture to the right? No; it's not a shot from "This Old House."

And finally the one just below to the left is not one of Santa's elves working the "naughty & nice list," though she's likely on the same pay scale.

Instead these and the following pictures are the anatomy of a dress rehearsal - in this case for "Rumors" which opens this weekend at Seacoast Repertory Theatre.

The COP at the top is C. Emerson Kelly. The next shows "Rumors" set designer Erik Diaz and director Jonathan Carr discussing a door issue. (Pretty impressive set hum)?

And the lady draped in blue light is stage manager Heidi Garcia keeping "Rumors" rehearsal on track.

Speaking of rumors this photo to the left won't help squelch those circulating about Tobin Moss. Word is Tobin abandoned his role as the obnoxious cousin in "All the Rage," for the last weekend run at the Players' Ring for the company of a little sweetie.

Look for yourself. Do picture lie? No. That IS a little sweetie.

But it's Megan Quinn who plays Moss's wife in the SRT production.

Oh and by the way, if you step over to the Ring, you'll find Dan Beaulieu covering Moss's part - or role. You know what I meant.

Here's the rest of "Rumor" cast hanging out in the green room waiting for call.

To our left, back on stage together for the third of forth time, Ed Batchelder and Carolyn Hause. Maybe you remember them from "Christmas Story?"

On our right is the ever lovely Lauren Sowa, with the always wild and crazy Christopher Bradley, (Oh, get over it Steve Martin. He is that good).

As you can see this is a talent-packed production. That means expectations are high. The pressure is on. Don't mean to make anyone nervous or anything - but we're expecting great things.

This last duo is Gardner Campbell and Crystal Korabek respectfully, newbies to the Rep stage. I plan on hitting the show Friday night to see how they hold up to against this strong collection.

And finally, the gentleman below, all alone in the dark, lit only by a computer screen, is Mike Condon, lighting designer.

Not pictured, costume designer Maura Suter, who also sat alone in the dark (but not forlorn) taking notes, tweaking details.

And there you have it folks - the anatomy of a show days before opening, all the techs working their butts off while the actors lounge in the green room.

Put the pitchforks and eyeliner down! It was just a joke.

I know, it resembles a cute little cartoon alien doesn't it? But it's not. It’s a hammered dulcimer built locally by York’s Steve Wagoner and Jenn Lynch, the former a fine carpenter and MD, the latter a well-known local hammered dulcimer and drummer. At a thrift store!

Didn’t buy it. Don’t play. So it's still there. For $75! Kowabunga! Hustle my friends, hustle. (Sorry checked back in, it's sold).

Before I leave, did you check out the latest G Lady video? It’s an interview with Bob Lord, Dreadnaught’s headman. Lord’s got a lot going on as a producer, solo musician and with the band. One of the group’s gigs is as house band for the Music Hall’s “Writers on a New England Stage.”

Because of that Bob has WONDERFUL stories about Dan Brown, (local boy - who G Lady gives a shout out to), Alan Alda, Madeleine Albright and more. Definitely check this one out. Most entertaining if I do say so myself – and I do.

I have to say I think Bob is one of the nicest people I've ever sat down with. Wicked nice, and talented. I think it comes across. - Am I right?

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Seems like these fellas have hung around the library a bit to long, hum?

Looks as if they could use a hand, or a hoof, a chest, anything for that matter. Kind of like a super model. - Oh. Did I just say that out loud? - Anyway....

Though very far gone they're yet to arrive. You'll find them hanging at the Portsmouth Public Library through the month of April part of a “Learning to See” project, conducted in Mexico by a local photographer pictured to the left.

Recognize her? Sure it’s a bit before her days behind the camera.

Hint: she ran the same project last year at Portsmouth Middle School. (and clearly has great fashion sense - take a look at those sneaker!!)

She just announced she’ll head out to Haiti and possibly New Orleans for another project later this year. (See that McCartin Woman’s Spotlight Gossip Column on the matter next week).

She’s also looking for people who might have spare digital cameras she can take to these latest gigs. Have one? Know someone that does – Pay forward my friend, pay forward. Who doesn’t need a bit of good karma these days eh?

Final hint, this camerawoman is celebrating her 10th anniversary as the house photographer for the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom.

Just as cute today as she was then – Nancy Grace Horton.

I’m waxin’ up the broom and getting ready to ride. There's a big meeting midweek at the Music Hall.

Come Wednesday Night G Lady is heading to the hall to make quorum with the ladies and all the others who love the sound of a spellbinding voice. I suspect it will be a full house considering Idina Menzel is flying in to entertain the troops.

Of course the pic at the top is the famous image of Idina as Ephaba in "Wicked." Does our people proud! (posted after the event. Saw it, loved it, where were you)?!

I suspect Patricia Lynch, the halls magic-maker, will be around that night. – Witches do love a good time, and this should prove to be a wicked good one. (Insert cackle here).

Just to get you in the mood I’ve reposted a pic of Patricia in full regalia, (I wonder if she uses the same broom) and a ghostly shot of the hall's grand dame; (we must wonder why this picture will only print in its negative from. hummmm).

Not to be outdone, (as IF anyone could top this hat!) here’s a shot of G Lady sporting her uniform. Hasn't been out since the day I took you on tour of Port smouth’s haunted buildings, (which includes mention of the Hall’s specters).

How about a wonderful, free, outing for the family today or a solo trek to lift the spirits? Super! Then hustle down to “Splash: The Art of Portsmouth Young People" at the Portsmo uth Library, (up through March).

No doubt you'll experience the charge of finding artists soon to grace pro-gallery walls . But – and more importantly - you’ll see the very spirit of art, the excitement, passion, exploration and individual eye unhampered by absorbed sophistication. Can there be anything more heady than honest art?!

Too juvenile you say? Oh you silly compartmentalizer.

Have you checked out the Alien Gallery at the Portsmouth Herald online site yet? No? Well do. Next time you take a mental-health break on the work computer, (we know you do), instead of surfing shoe-sale or depressing or unsightly sites click on the Alien Gallery. Now turn off the mental critic and REALLY look.

I promise you’ll laugh, guffaw, smile, ponder and yes be in awe. The library show has the same power. And no, this is not a Public Service Announcement, or smarmy do-gooder proclamation.

Quash the assumptions my friend and you are in for a real treat.

Beauty and the Bonnet

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

So, it would appear this little lady was a bit less than thrilled with her Cream Egg. She was probably hoping for a Peep.

Either way she grew up to be a "smiler," not to mention one heck of a fine painter. Recognize her?

I doubt this second photo helps much – of course that’s why I put it here.

I know what you're thinking. You think I have it out for her. Why else would I post the poor unsuspecting woman's graduation photo?

Face it folks with time ALL graduation pics have "that look." And there lies my defense.

Who among us has a year book photo that doesn't horrify or induce hives? We're definitely in this league together! - And besides. Look. She's cute. AND her glasses are fashionable again.

Moreover, would it be SO terrible if we got a tiny chuckle from say - the hair. It's been a long winter after all and no harm done; am I right?

So, have you figured out who it is yet?

Hint: She was awarded honorary distinction Master Pastelist from the Pastel Society of America, and full Artist status by the Copley Society of Boston.

Hint 2: Works the Foreside streets.

And finally, she's a lady with a fine sense of humor - or at least I hope so.

Well here she is, still wearing dapper chapeaus and sporting a good-natured smile.

Meet Gail Sauter, pastel and oil artist, whose studio is on Government St, Kittery, Maine.

Gail says if you see the light on tap on the door and come on in. She’s fine with folks dropping by the studio if she's in - check out her paintings, (like those included here).

Well G Lovers, it sounds as if we have a wonderful, warm weekend coming our way. Might be a great time for a Kittery Foreside stroll. There's a lot of art along that route these days.

Let the turntables roll! The RPM Challenge entries are in.

The elves are nearly finished their tasks and the big spin is around the corner.

This year there’s EIGHT-HUNDRED CDs my friend. 800! That’s a whole lot of music. Each CD is registered, covers scanned and as we speak – so to speak - the tunes are being computerized into play lists. “It’s like The Factory in here, I tell ya,” says Karen Marzloff; RPM founding organizer and chief elf bottle washer, scanner and logger.

Soon we’ll hear the melodic, the disharmony and the tone deaf - and importantly the passion - at the FREE, RPM Global Listening Party (March 28).

If you can't make it to Berkeley/Oakland, CA, there's four shindigs in Portsmouth. It starts at the Music Hall. Then you stay or head out to harken the sound at the Press Room, Loaf and Ladle, or the all-age Riverrun Bookstore.

Karen says you can truly feel the passion in the work. “It’s moving,” she confided – a bit ferklempt really. ”When you put all this together it’s a powerful statement.”

Right on sister! Power to the people – 800 individuals and groups strong!

RPM is putting together an online Jukebox with all 20,000 songs from the past four Challenges as well. You KNOW the Muses are psyched. Expect the creative vibes to surge.

So listen up Gossip Lovers, (pun intended) be there or be square.

Heading to Urinetown.

Greetings Gossip Lovers

If you’re thinking these three were at Seacoast Rep last night hoping to land a role in “Urinetown” – wrong. They’re the ones the hopefuls needed to impress. Scare you just a little?

Well it shouldn't really. Left to right it’s Adrienne Maitland, choreographer, Craig Faulkner, SRT’s assistant artistic director and Bill Humphreys, "Urinetown" director. – Eat your heart out Cowell and company.

While the trio were the "judges," they where also some of the evening’s best entertainment – along with Paul Erwin on keyboards, the show’s musical director.

In short order an evening's, inside joke formed, thanks to Bill’s colorful, oft repeated instructions for the cold read characters. “Gritty, lowlife, sewer rat, dirty, nasty” and the like. His version of rabble-rouser went from rubble, ruble and rebel with a few more hysterical mispronunciations. Poor auditioners had no idea what prompted the out-of-context laughs.

But it sure didn't keep them away. The place was PACKED gossip lovers! Upwards of 60 performers showed, new and familiar faces; exceptionable to passable. Auditions were originally scheduled for 6 to 9:30; but ran 4:30 to past 11. Among the hopeful, seacoast favorite Merrill Pfeiffer, who came up from her new New York home to give it a shot.

One thing is for sure, this show has a shot at being one of the seacoast’s most memorable. (Can you say pressure : ). There was a plethora of exceptional voices. And that young man in the blue shirt – woooweee, show stealer in the best way. And of course Bill is back from North Carolina to direct. - Yes, we can expect great things.

Blair's Got the Blues

Hey Gossip Lovers,

When my spies sent me this photo my first thought was “Would Blair Hundertmark leave us for little blue men?” The horror!

The seacoast theater leading man/director was snapped recently on a Boston stage with members of Blue Man Group. Well don’t you know I tracked him down immediately to get the scoop. Could he desert us for a crew of cobalt cuties?

He assured me he would not, “I’m not blue enough!” says Blair.

He explained he met the blue boys during his current tour as Master of Ceremonies for “FIRST Robotics Competition 2009,” (his 11th tour). This one takes him to DC, Boston, Dallas, Annapolis, Seattle, Minneapolis and Atlanta. But he’ll be back in time to teach a Shakespeare Residency at York Middle School and then direct the New Hampshire Theatre Projects Teen Camp. (You lucky, lucky campers)!

This summer he jets off to Tamworth NH – okay jet is a tad strong - to direct two plays at the Barnstormers Theatre.

I’m sure you’re all fine with that. As long as we know he’s not traveling too far, for too long.

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

Yes, fairness and generosity are expected of one in my line of work. I’m a proselytizer after all.

And so it will be. I shall pull up the gloves and spill the beans - hard as it may be.

I must admit, sharing can be tough at times. Am I right? You know, like giving up the address to your favorite thrift shop. Another case in point: the NH Media Makers gathering – which is ironically all about sharing.

Why stingy on this account? Given this Sunday’s standing-room-only status at Crackskull’s in Newmarket - and G Lady’s intent to return to this marvelous group o’ geeks – it simply worries me there will be no place to park the chapeau and all things attached.

But - in the spirit of good gossipwomanship – I shall share. Let it be known the NHMM rocks. Its meetings are exhilarating, inspiring and exciting. - How could it be otherwise with its own Chiki Tiki God (pictured above) in charge of happiness. There were a whole lot of happy sardines, about 50 strong, lost in the elation of exchange.

There were folks involved in film making, illustration, education, writing, blogging, business, photography, cartooning- lots more and all things tech. They shared what they do, hope to do and have done; neophyte to expert.

It was a bloody ball gossip lovers; all that creative energy just swirling around, Too many great folk to mention, but check out the NHMM blog for more info – or not. Don’t feel pressured. I mean it may not be your thing. ... You might just want to sleep in on Sunday. … Okay, so maybe I’ll see you there next time.

Before I close this one out – here’s a shout out and a star for Mr. ShareMaster himself, the ever-generous John Herman (founder) who brings order, spirit and class to the event. You go Johnny!

Just another weekend quick tip.

Before you head to one of the incredible music or theater performances this weekend - this month for that matter - mosey down to the 2009 College Invitational at the New Hampshire Art Association, main gallery. WOW!

G Lady isn't going to snow you; not every piece is pro. - Did I just say that out loud? - Well you betchya. No snow on this blog. Too much out there as it is hum? (Referring to winter of course).

BUT, let me say , this exhibit does indeed feature work by tomorrow's big players.

The show has a lot of innovative, risky, even disturbing work, along with ones of sheer beauty. We're talking exciting folks. Exciting!

Get OUT Tonight!!

Greetings Gossip Lovers,

If you are viewing this posting in real time it's fairly likely you're not making the wisest choice at the moment. As much as G Lady loves you dropping by, and hopes you do so often, it's Saturday night my friend: GO OUT AND TAKE IT IN!

If you hit West End Studio Theatre it's likely you'll see the scullery maid seen here. Actually that would be Marguerite Mathews going about the glamorous work of the small theater director.

G Lady dropped in at WEST this afternoon and caught both she and her Pontine Theatre partner Greg Gathers giving the place a go-over before tonight's show "A Beautiful Game," a solo performance by guest artist Michael Parent.

Note that jubilant smile on Mathews' face. Yes she was glad to see G Lady. But she was also glad to win the coin toss. Gathers got the bathrooms.

I'd only just missed snapping him at work. Just as well. Greg wasn't quite as upbeat about his chore. BUT, he was about this weekend's show.

When I asked Greg, "why should anyone go to the theater on such a lovely night (a tropical 40-something)," - after checking if my hat was on too tight he said "Well Michael Palmer is a wonderful, world-class storyteller," (tells down-Maine beauties, French Canadian tall-tales and talks hockey), " he's funny and very engaging," says Greg. "And because he's here for only one weekend. You miss it - you miss it!"

Say no more, say no more!

Besides, after all the gussyin' the pair did for your visit, do you want to be the cause of a three-quarters full house. I'm sure not! The 4 p.m. is over, but there's an 8 p.m. tonight and a 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Oh almost forgot to explain the lovely little bobbleheads pictured here. Like them? (Can't you just feel the jealousy emanating from the Friendly Toast)?

Well you've missed this year's window of opportunity to garner one of these babies. They're the trophies for Pontine's annual Bowlathon.

And congrads Cary Wendell! - You go Cary! The painter and multi-talented theater artist was top adult scorer at 267. Anne Poubeau brought in the most cash and TJ Scott was top kid took top kid score.

Okay, must get this up. Another one to follow in mere minutes. So many glorious things to discuss. It's the weekend!
